Legalization of Medical Marijuana.. a problem in perception
by Regina Di Silvestro

Marijuana and its derivatives have been shown through research to work via cannabinoid receptors causing
varied effects from relaxation to appetite stimulation. Control of an herbal product that causes little to any harm
should not in my opinion be allowed. However, I also feel that the vast Marijuana using community exploit its
effects and not so much its medicinal use. This is possibly one reason why if it is to be fully legalized, it is having a
hard time doing so.
The way Medical Marijuana is being marketed and labeled by most dispensaries here in California doesn't seem
to validate its use a "medicinal" supplement. Strain names like Kush, Chronic and AK-47 just to name a few don't
really herald someone looking for the medicinal application of Cannabis its credibility. Nevertheless do some of the
advertising that promotes or surrounds many Medical Marijuana magazines or booklets. Having a "Stoner of the
Month" or authors writing articles about how thrashed they got after they tried a particular marijuana product or
even pictures of Charles Manson on the ad doesn't lend well to Marijuana's credibility as a useful, herbal, dietary
supplement.
If the Medical Marijuana community which encapsulates the growers, dispensaries and consumers create
perhaps a better standard of marketing towards Marijuana products then perhaps others in the community would
bend a bit more easily about recognizing its legitimacy in healthful applications.
